In 1940, Highgate was bought by Lloyd George's family and it was let to tenants until 1969. Early in the 1970s, the house was opened to the public and in the mid 1980s, it was transferred by the family to Gwynedd County Council. The house was restored to reflect how it looked when Lloyd George lived there as a young boy, retaining the original features such as the range and the banister. It was opened to the public again as an additional attraction for the Museum.
